Six Sigma Belts:

Certified Six Sigma practitioners are officially referred to as a “belt”.  Like the Japanese art
of self-defense, what “belt” the person is granted depends on his/her collective level of
training, expertise, experience, & certification.  Also like the Japanese martial arts system of
progression, beginners usually start by training & earning a Green Belt.  The following
highlights what can be expected out of a Certified Six Sigma Belts:

Green Belt

  • Intermediate understanding of process improvement (sequence of events)
  • Good command of basic quality tools (e.g. Fishbone, Flow Chart, Pareto, etc.)
  • Expert comprehension of basic statistics (e.g. mean, median, standard deviation,
    confidence interval, capabilities)
  • Able to read & comprehend basic Control Charts (continuous data)
  • Able to conduct & analyze basic Design of Experiments (DOE)
  • Can lead a local process improvement effort from start to finish


Black Belt

  • Expert understanding of process improvement
  • Expert command of basic & advanced quality tools (e.g. QFD, FMEA, Decision
    Matrix, etc.)
  • Good comprehension of advanced statistics (e.g. Regression Analysis, ANOVA,
    Normality Tests)
  • Can read, comprehend, & construct basic Control Charts (continuous & discrete
    data)
  • Able to conduct & analyze advanced Design of Experiments (Partial Factorials)
  • Can enact as a teacher/coach to Green Belts
  • Can lead Green Belts on a large-scale process improvement effort from start to finish



Master Black Belt

  • Expert understanding of process improvement
  • Expert command of all quality tools
  • Full comprehension of advanced statistics
  • Full comprehension of all Control Charts types
  • Full comprehension of Design of Experiments
  • Can enact as a teacher/coach to Black Belts
  • Can lead Black Belts on a global-scale process improvement effort from start to finish
